Notes from our testing

Brew the tea double strength — freezing mutes tannin more than it mutes sugar.

Half iced tea, half lemonade sounds like it should be a straight swap into the machine, and the numbers cooperate: lemonade around 11 Brix, unsweetened tea at essentially zero, so the blend needs roughly an ounce of syrup per batch to get back to 11. Easy.

The flavour is the harder part. Cold suppresses bitter and astringent notes far more than it suppresses sweet ones, so a normally brewed tea disappears entirely behind the lemonade once frozen. Brew it at double strength — twice the bags, same water, same time — and it comes through as tea rather than as vaguely brown lemonade.

Do not over-steep instead of doubling up. Long steeping extracts tannin that turns harsh and drying, and that particular bitterness does survive the cold. Two bags for four minutes beats one bag for ten.

Black tea is the default but this is a good place to experiment, because the tea is the only thing carrying aroma. Peach black tea or an Earl Grey both work and neither disturbs the sugar calculation, since you are sweetening separately.
